What’s The Difference Between Sales and Marketing?

You’re not the only one who has confused Sales with Marketing, rightly so as these, both have the same objective – to increase revenue. Acceler8me offers consulting in both sales strategy and marketing strategy, so we thought it’d be a good idea to put together this handing guide so that you can tell the difference.

Frankly, you would use ‘Marketing’ to attract attention to your product, get it out there, address the gap in the market. Once it is out there it is then the salesperson’s’ job to persuade the customer to purchase the product – Sales.

“Make a customer, not a sale.” – Katherine Barchetti

Think of Marketing as the first point of interaction with potential customers/clients, using easier advertising methods such as online, leaflets etc. Whereas the term sales relate to converting the leads into purchases.

Digital methods of marketing are the most popular due to the fact that there are a lot of systems in place to monitor what works, what doesn’t work and which areas need tweaking.

For example; take the idea that you are trying to sell an apple, you would use marketing approaches like adverts, promotions, offers, recommendations to convince people that this is the best apple they will ever purchase, this will increase your chances of selling apples, and the number of apples you have sold are your sales. Monitoring your marketing approaches may be you realising a particular increase in sales during the summer for the sales of apples, therefore you would learn from this and might make a special offer on apples that month to increase revenue.
